Hawke, I fully agree with your profile idea.  I will be implementing this in 0.9.2 probably.

I know of no "Real" Jabber users that would be confused by having a username part and a hostname/domain part.
Confusion was not the word i meant. I mean that a JID should stay a JID, and not be split up into several parts in a settings dialog (maybe so in a wizard, but even there it should be clearly indicated what the resulting JID would be). Maybe the analogy is not very accurate, but e-mail addresses aren't split up in 2 fields either.

Even better !

What about a compromise?
I have to agree that a JID is one defined format that should not be split into two parts. On the other hand i understand the confusion of users that don't know that it is really as simple as an email.

So why not create

a) three fields:

AAAAAA  BBBBB.BB

CCCCC@CCCC.CC

Where A is the name,  B is the server and C is generated "on-the-fly" as you type.

or B) one pre-formatted field

JID: XXXXXX@XXXXXX.XXX

where X has to be filled out, and the"@" and the "." are already in unchangable fields

this should be easy to understand for everone.

Regarding the account input, we already worked out a solution in CVS, and that's to simply not let the user enter a malformed JID.  If you try to save the account settings, you get an error.

Entering the JID seems to be the 'right way', IMO, and even Rhymbox (considered the easiest of all Jabber clients) takes input this way.  The key is to make sure the user is informed about what is going on.  Rhymbox includes a little example telling the person to enter a JID in the form "user@host.com" if I remember right, and of course should not take a bad JID.

The problem with Psi is that it gives the user no feedback whatsoever about the bad JID, only vague error messages when you try to connect.

I personally wouldn't want 2. There are a lot of times (mostly in delicate situations) that i start typing something, rethink it, retype something, rethink it again, and decide to shut up alltogether :)
I think i would have had some embarassing situations if i had 2) on by default ;)
Besides, would it be feasible in Jabber ?
I agree with you on this. My contacts being able to see what I'm typing before I send it would be A Very Bad Thing™.
I have quite a few techno-neophyte friends that IM me for help and I quite often type a VERY snide or snarky reply (it's my Tech Support Bob nature) before deleting it and giving them a legitimate answer. I'd lose a lot of friends if they knew what I was REALLY thinking.
A built-in Qtconfig type option would be cool.
For anybody who might NOT know, qtconfig allows you to change the look and feel (the color schemes, etc) of the Qt interface (very nice if you don't have KDE installed). Sometimes you want something other than gun metal grey. :-p
I'm already scheming to see if I can whip up something to change the Qt settings depending on which Fluxbox theme I select.
My life. Like it matters.

Most important new feature for me would be compatibility with gpg 1.2.3.

The incompatibility was a bug, not a lack of features. The next version of Psi will work with GPG1.2.3 again.

Down, boy!  Auto-receiving is purely a client-side decision, I would think. :-p

what did I do? i know that file transport is one thing that you dont like to talk about but its really usefull...

i dont want to criticize you for your work, but the history is a little bit odd. i dont know if its possible to make something like
"the history window" divided vertically:
left half shows people
right is divided once again but horizontacly:
upper half shows dates
lower one shows the history at that day with that person
easy to use, but powerfull at the same time ;-)

What gave you that idea ? Fritzy's just tired of saying the same thing a hundred times. If you want to know what that is, just look at the third post of this thread, do a search on file transfer on the forums, whatever. It's even been repeated again yesterday in another thread. Anyway, i'll repeat it myself once for you: 'File Transfer is coming in Psi 0.9.2'

Besides, the head-developer of Psi was participating in the development of the file transfer standards, so i don't think he "doesn't like to talk about it".

Fritzy is not a Psi developer, I am. :D

And anyway, your description of how the history dialog should look is exactly the way I wish to make it. :)
