Subject: PSI for newbies
Just to let you know.
I have created simple guide for PSI newbies as I found some people who are not very experienced computer users have problems with configuration first account in PSI.
The guide is available on my http://www.tigase.org/node/25 site.

I hope it is helpful for some people.

Great!

I don't mean to be picky, (and you got it right throughout the article, just not in the headers) but the client name is Psi, rather than PSI (it's not an acronym).

That is excellent work.  Would it bother you if it were to be merged into a wiki page on our site?  No offense but you know how transient the 'net can be.  Here today, gone tomorrow.

Thank you for pointing it out. Fixed now.
The idea was to create such guide for a few most important Jabber clients and client names
had to be a title like: PSI, KOPETE, GAIM and so on...
But as you said it might be confusing so probably it is not the best idea.

"Unfortunately" I have to agree with you ;-)
To be honest I don't mind if you just copy this guide to your Wiki system, just leave original author name and put a link to original article source.

Jabber client guides is not the main purpose of tigase.org site existence. I work on Jabber/XMPP server implementation and recently I launched test version of the server on my machine. I am looking for a way to encourage people to take part in testing. The guides are written to make it easier for those who are not very familiar with computers and at the moment use different IM systems. And I started from Psi because I like this client the most.

As I noticed there is no such guide in your documentation system I thought it would be good to let you know about it.

And I think such guide is necessary as there is at least one step in the configuration which is very confusing for beginners. I failed to convince a few people to use Psi because of this. I mean step 1. and step 3. in my guide. Some people just can't understand why they have to enter accounts name 2 times. They find it very confusing.

Of course, if we use your guide in our Psi Wiki, we'll leave your name and link to the original article.

One is an account name, and the other is a name of the server. But still, account name usually is set to a name of the server. Only few people use two (or more) accounts on the same server and use account names to differentiate between them.

--- EDIT ---

From the user's/reader's point of view: I've looked at your guide and I really like it, but one thing bothers me - the screenshot thumbnails are highly unreadable (only the first thumbnail is quite readable). It would be great to scale the screenshots in the way that would still readable (maybe using bicubic resampling method?).

michalj,
I know why there are 2 names and I understand the need for them. I am not even saying this is wrong. What I meant was that this is difficult to explain to ppl who are very "unexperienced" computer users.

I think it might be worthy to test the new settings in options.xml configuration file of Psi-0.11 - there is an option to disable Psi support for multiple accounts. Maybe this way Psi would not require to provide the account name?

kobit, I'm interested in your Jabber server implementation, but couldn't find much information about it. Do you have a project website or something like for any other of the big servers? I don't mean the "here's the bugs, here's the milestones" but an informative product description page or something.

LonelyPixel,
you are absolutely right. It is a shame there is no such info. This is one of the tasks before next version release. I just thought the software is not ready and useful yet for anybody else except myself.
There is an old project site with some information: http://tigase.dev.java.net/ though. Hopefully more recent and comprehensive documentation will be available on current Tigase site this week.

Good point. Just rescalled images properly, they look much better now. Thank you.
