In a  word - No.  Gossip showed me his excellent little Invision jabber mod a while ago; it allows forum messages to be sent via Jabber instead of email.  While I was impressed with his work, we are still not going to change over to Invision Board.

If Akito and I find the time, we might investigate hacking a similar thing into our forum.  Is anyone interested in having such a feature?  We're certainly not going to do it unless most people want it...

I thing best thing is not IBP by Jabber instead of e-mail, but regular Jabber support - it allows having line in profile and sending message (w/o Java).

Yes, I would most definitly be interested in a mod like this  :!:  :!:  :!:   What would be even more impressive is if when you click on the jabber icon if you are logged into your jabber client it opens a standard messaging box, if not logged in it allows forum messages to be sent via Jabber.  Thus eliminating the need for Private Messaging all together.  If you are logged into the site but haven't downloaded Jabber you can send messages to members on the site but not recieve them, if you download the jabber client you can send and recieve.  Do you think this is possible  :?:  :?:

I am interested in doing this mod.  I have done simular things on some of my websites w/ PHP (Gossip's Class.Jabber.PHP).  However, I would want to be in contact with whomever is working on the presence indicator.

So, whomever is doing the presence indicator for this website, please get in touch with me:

Are you saying that you want a copy of our current hacked code so that you can further hack status indicators into it?  If so, we graciously accept your help.  I will jabber you after I've finished my night shift and had some sleep.

Yes, that's what I had in mind.  I'm also curious as to your current status indicator for the author's.  I assume it's a bot that keeps track of status in a database?
The only problem with this approach is that the users will have to accept a subscription from the bot.  I've made a bot that does all this automatically, and could even go out and request subscriptions from everyone who has entered their JID into the database... but is this really the best approach?  Do people really want a bot to show up on thier list?

To offset the uselessness of a presence indicator bot in your list, the bot could also give you the latest news on request, notify you when people have replied to your posts, etc.  Just some ideas.  Let me know what you think.

If someone were to code up a bot which notified me when a new message was posted, I'd be delighted.
So there's definitely one user who'd appreciate it ;)

Whoah... notify you when anyone posts on the message board ANYWHERE?  Obviously we're going to have to make this bot configurable to individual preferences...

Working on it right now.  :-)

Also, should the configuration interface for the bot be on a webpage, or configured by talking to the bot, or, dare I say, both?

Here are some options that could be implimented.

Send notify of ALL new Messages? Yes/No
Send notify of ALL new Threads?  Yes/No
Send notify of messages posted in threads that I have posted in?  Yes/No
Send notify of announcement messages? Yes/No
Send notify messages as: Chat/Message

These notifications would include breif information like the Subject, Poster, Time Posted, and a link to the thread it's refering to.

By default, notifications would be disabled.

I'm happy, and as far as I can tell it would be easiest to, have the bot configurable by talking to it, as for the other things, I read the boards religously so I'd want anything going :)

The Authors page pulls an image from a php script on another server.  I've contacted the admins about getting a copy of their code, but they've basically told me that I can link to theirs.  If you can implement a similar thing in-house, I'm more than happy to use it.  In fact, your bot sounds simply wonderful.  I currently have four bots on my roster, but only two show online.  Perhaps you can make your bot appear as "offline", in an effort to keep the roster less cluttered.  Having a web interface to decide which posts it notifies you about would be preferrable to sending it commands.

As an aside - the phpBB guys are trying to implement Jabber on the main tree, but are having issues with showing status.  If we can get this going with self-contained code, I'm sure they'd love to hear about it.

Even cooler, show it online if you have it enabled, but offline if you don't

just a couple of suggestions

Thanks for the ideas.  I'll be working on the bot this week, and will present it to the community next Monday... However, that does not mean it will be implimented immediately.

I need a volunteer for one thing:
See the Jabber icon below this post?  Can someone modify that gif and make offline, na, xa, and away icons that match (the icon that already exists will work fine for online)?  I stink with graphics.

Thanks for the suggestion -=harry=-, it can probably be done.  I've experimented with sending <presence/> packets specifically to individuals, and it seems to work quite well.  However, it will definately take some further experimentation.
