Subject: Artwork, iconsets, websites and 0.10
I'm cross-posting this from the development list because a lot of people here are aware of the previous plans we had for the rebranding for 0.10.
I don't know quite what we're going to do about iconsets yet.
As everyone probably knows, we've been looking out for new iconsets, logos and website for the new release for quite a while. Back when we started looking, a few iconsets were proposed, and mray's were chosen and refined. Mray also proposed a new website and logo, which ran unopposed, despite people's reservations. Jason recently (in the last week or so) proposed a new website, which is stunningly good, and some logos which show great promise. Jason's website was a pretty much unanimous hit, so for that reason, and also the fact that the website using mray's design was running seven months or so overdue due to implementation difficulties, we decided to stop pursuing mray's design and go with Jason's.
Despite about twelve months of work put into the iconsets on both his behalf and the dev team who've worked with him, mray wants an "all or nothing" CI (corporate image); he's told us he doesn't want us to use his icons unless we also take his website and logo. Some of you are possibly thinking at this point "But he released the icons into the Public Domain, we can still use them if we want". Yes he did, and yes we can, but we won't. I can't stop people using the icons or distributing them, but I can honour his request not to put them in Psi. So I will.
I know many people have put a deal of effort into this which has been wasted, I know many people will feel very 'let down' and I know it hurts the Psi project, so there's not much point discussing these things when we have so much work to do.
I'll go away and think for a few days about what's best to do, it's clear that stellar2 was the iconset I wanted, since mray worked so hard to produce exactly what I requested. I think the options we have are
As I said, I'll think about what we should do for a bit, and then we'll try and do it, pick up the pieces we can and move on.
In slightly more cheerful news, which I think we all need at this point, despite the ongoing sagas with 0.10, we've been hard at work on the Qt4 port, which is coming along quite well. It's not ready for even an early public release yet but it's going well. Mac users will be excited to know that they will be getting brushed metal windows (optionally, so if there's anyone else on the planet who dislikes it as much as mblsha, they'll be able to disable it).
And as a teaser: I hope to have some pretty exciting news soon (hopefully in a month or so), so watch this space. Despite this setback, things are looking up for Psi.

- to take new designs to the table, if people have any
- to say the same things I said to mray to another designer and see them produce something very much like stellar2
- to stick with what we have (stellar1 and crystal)
