well in my experience, to begin with yes, you need to locate the chatroom(s) of choice using Service Discovery. Psi then remembers (bookmarks) the Chatrooms you visit, the Nickname you used and also keeps track of these for each JabberID you have - accessible via the "join groupchat" popup.
If you take the time to customise Psi (options or preferences) you can add (or remove) buttons in your Roster that give you quick access to the functions like "join groupcaht" that you use most. This makes Psi compact and easy to use.
